Week 3

Howdy! It's General Conference weekend. I hope y'all are getting your spiritual cups filled.

This week we read a case study on Magdalena Yesil.

Let me start out by saying that she is quite an impressive lady. I found her story inspiring.  It gave me the desire to seek out new opportunities to grow and develop. And although she faced challenges she never gave up. But rather she sought ways to educate herself, which I find so inspirational.  This gives me hope that if I strive to seek knowledge I too will be able to further my own career path.

As we learn from D&C 88:118 "And as all have not faith, seek ye diligently and teach one another words of wisdom; yea, seek ye out of the best books words of wisdom; seek learning, even by study and also by faith. "

Even if doubts cloud my mind, her example shows that if one is willing you can grow further then you thought. It's like in Matthew 17:20 when Christ said

"... If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you."

We are stronger than we think. But we need to believe that.

We had the opportunity to reflect on her situation and consider what we would do in her place. Below are the questions we pondered over.

How did Magdalena Yesil's habit of lifelong learning benefit her career?
From the beginning of her life she has shown a desire for learning and progress. After graduating and starting on a career in engineering, she felt lonely. She realized that this work was something that did not fill her cup. This experience gave her an opportunity to find a new solution and give something else a try. And that she experienced setbacks in life she never stopped learning.
If you were in Yesil's position, how would you respond to the offer made by USVP?
Well on the one hand there is more stability in working for another company rather than being your own boss. Though I believe she would want to stay an entrepreneur and start another company. She seems to like to grow and stretch on her business path. Being an entrepreneur provides her that freedom that she gets from being her own boss lets her do just that.
How would you address the challenges to family life that this kind of career would present to you? Why would you remain or not remain in this type of career?
Thank goodness I am not in Magdalena's shoes. But I think it was a blessing that her mother was able to help with raising the children. In my mom's culture they believe in doing that and as she lives with me right now it provides great blessings. Although I would not remain in it. We are each individuals with our own talents. And Magdalena has a great talent for that. My business right now relies on me and my suppliers as I am an artist who gets commissioned to a variety of projects. But I do have the fortune to have a husband and extended family who is willing and able to assist as needed.
Magdalena pondered one more transition, from entrepreneur to financier. What would you recommend she consider doing? Why?
I would recommend she make the transition. It would provide her the opportunity to have vacation and other benefits. Whereas being an entrepreneur does not provide that as your life is more rigorous in that. Also she would have the chance to get on the job training which would only add to the knowledge she had already. There is a time and season for everything, and I think she should take the opportunity. In the end I think it would be a great benefit to her in her entrepreneurial endeavors.

What’s your #1 consistency goal for this month?

My goal is to start the week off right and stay on top of my course work rather than feeling like I'm treading water. This will enable me to not feel overwhelmed and give me some consistency.

Week 2

Howdy! And welcome to Week 2 of B183:15. Today I will share what I learned while watching Randy Pausch's Last Lecture. The result of which posed some interesting questions for me.

Why do you think Randy Pausch was able to achieve so many of his childhood dreams?
I believe that Randy was able to achieve many of his dreams because he did not give up even if he hit an obstacle. But rather he looked for ways to make those things happen within the system. Also he worked hard to achieve his goals. And even if one did not come to completion he still appreciated the lesson it taught him. 

Do you feel that dreaming is important? Why or why not?
I believe that dreaming is important as it gives you an aspiration to reach. And as Norman Vincent Peale said “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars.” 

Discuss at least one of your childhood dreams. Explain why you believe you can or cannot achieve this dream.
One of my childhood dreams was to become a mother. Which is still an aspiration I hope to reach one day. I do have hopes of achieving this dream. But unlike many out there that can get pregnant through natural causes or with a little help from the doctor. Unfortunately, that is not the case for me. I've tried both methods and the result was that the fertility doctor could not help me. That is she could not help me unless I went the route of having the lab create a test tube baby. The downside to this is the financial cost. So as I did not want to waste money on the hope of becoming a mom I have changed the route I would pursue this. Which leaves me with the option of adoption. 

I believe these are great lessons for everyone to learn. After all life does not always go as planned. But if you stick to it and try you will be a better person for it. (343 words)

Week 1

Howdy! My name is Mary Driggs and this is the start of my Entrepreneurial Journal. I am creating this in conjunction with taking the B183: Introduction to Entrepreneurship course. Which is a course I take through BYU-Idaho. I am pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management with an emphasis on Entrepreneurship. Also I have another blog devoted to my paper crafting and an Etsy shop where I have some of those items for sale. 

So far there are just so many things I need to learn and I look forward to sharing those insights with you. If you find any of what I will be sharing interesting or if you have your own insights I would love to read about them. 

For this Fall Semester my goals are to:

• keep up with my studies (I'm currently taking 4 courses)
• remember to take it one bite at a time rather than get overwhelmed
• take good care of myself so I can do all the things He would have me do
• be able to be of help to my family and Church
• be able to fulfill my Church calling (Assistant Secretary in Ward Primary)
• and remember to always pray to Him for guidance and help
